What is a Predictive Dialer?

A predictive dialer places outbound calls automatically, dialling several numbers at once and connecting answered calls to available agents, so agents spend less time waiting on unanswered calls.

It works by predicting when an agent will next be free and dialling ahead of that moment. Because most outbound attempts go unanswered, dialling more numbers than there are free agents keeps agents talking rather than listening to ring tone.

The failure mode is the reason predictive dialling is regulated. If the prediction is wrong and more calls are answered than there are agents, someone picks up to silence and the call is dropped. In the US the FCC caps abandoned calls and requires a prompt message when no agent is available.

A power dialler is the safer relative: one call per free agent, no prediction, no abandonment risk. It is slower and it is what most teams should start with unless call volume genuinely justifies the complexity and the compliance work.
