Business Call Forwarding

Send business calls to a mobile, a colleague or a whole team — with your business caller ID preserved, not your personal number. Rules for hours, availability and failure.

Call forwarding routes an incoming call to a different destination — another number, a mobile, or a group — based on rules you set. On a cloud phone system those rules can depend on time of day, whether the line is busy, or whether the primary destination is reachable at all.

How do I forward a business number to my mobile?

Set a forwarding rule on the number and choose the destination. You decide whether it rings immediately, after a set number of seconds with no answer, or at the same time as your desk phone.

Your business number is what the recipient sees, not the mobile handling the call. That is the main reason to forward through the phone system rather than using carrier-level diversion, which commonly exposes the personal number — and once a customer has it, they will use it.

The six forwarding types

TypeWhen to use it
Always forward Every call goes straight to the destination. Useful for a number that should never ring at a desk, such as a published line answered by an outsourced team.
Forward on no answer Rings the primary device first, then moves on after a set number of seconds. The most common configuration for individual users.
Forward on busy Diverts only when the line is already in use, so a second caller is not left ringing out.
Simultaneous ring Rings desk phone, softphone and mobile at once; whoever answers first takes the call. Fastest to answer, but it can send calls to voicemail on an unanswered mobile before colleagues get a chance.
Sequential ring Tries devices or people in a defined order. Slower than simultaneous, but it respects escalation order — useful where seniority matters.
Forward on failure Triggers when the primary destination is unreachable, typically an internet outage. This is the rule that keeps a business reachable during an incident.

Simultaneous or sequential?

Simultaneous ringing answers fastest, and for most small teams it is the right default. There is one failure mode worth knowing: an unanswered mobile can divert the call to its own carrier voicemail before a colleague picks up — so the caller reaches a personal voicemail greeting instead of the business.

Avoid it by setting the forwarding timeout shorter than the mobile's own voicemail delay, usually around 15 to 20 seconds. Sequential ringing sidesteps the problem entirely at the cost of a slower answer.

Forwarding on business hours

Business-hours rules route calls differently inside and outside working hours, including by day of week and holiday calendar. The common pattern is a main queue during the day and an on-call mobile outside it.

For distributed teams, this is how calls follow whichever region is currently working rather than ringing a desk in a closed office — see remote teams. For menu-driven routing before forwarding, see auto attendant.

What forwarding does not solve

Forwarding moves a call; it does not queue one. If callers regularly wait, or you need hold music, position announcements, and supervisor monitoring, you need call queues rather than a forwarding chain.

It also will not fix an unreachable destination you have not planned for. Configure forward-on-failure before an outage, because it cannot be set up during one.

Frequently asked questions

How do I forward my business number to my mobile?

Set a forwarding rule on the number in the Salamtalk admin panel, choosing the destination mobile and whether it rings immediately, after no answer, or simultaneously with your desk phone. Calls still show your business caller ID to the recipient, so your personal number is never exposed.

Will my personal number show when I forward calls?

No. Outbound and forwarded calls present your business number, not the mobile handling them. This is the main reason to forward through the phone system rather than using carrier-level diversion, which often leaks the real number.

Does call forwarding cost extra?

No. Forwarding is included from the $15 per user per month plan. Calls forwarded to US and Canadian numbers are covered by unlimited calling; forwarding to international destinations is billed at standard per-minute rates for that destination.

What is the difference between simultaneous and sequential ringing?

Simultaneous rings every configured device at once and connects whoever answers first, which minimises answer time. Sequential tries them in a defined order, which respects escalation but takes longer. Simultaneous has one trap worth knowing: an unanswered mobile can pick the call up on its own voicemail before a colleague answers.

Can I forward calls only during certain hours?

Yes. Business-hours rules route calls differently inside and outside working hours, including by day of week and holiday calendar. A common pattern is forwarding to mobile out of hours for an on-call rota while routing to the main queue during the day.

What happens to forwarded calls if my internet goes down?

Forward-on-failure routes calls to a mobile or alternative number when the primary destination is unreachable. The platform runs geo-redundant failover under a 99.9% uptime SLA, but that covers our infrastructure — your own connection needs this rule configured in advance, because it cannot be set up during an outage.

Can I forward to more than one person?

Yes. Forward to a ring group so a team is tried together or in order, rather than depending on one person being available. For structured queueing with wait times and supervisor tools, a call queue is the better fit.
